When people first began to surf the Internet using their web browsers, they used what is known as "pull technology".

Until recently, if you want information from the web, you need to get online with a web address and point your browser to that address. In this fashion, you are "pulling" the information by yourself.  Now this was fine when the web was small, but a corporate enterprise rarely spends too much money to develop a site that hopes someone's visiting. Thus, instead of waiting for the visitors, the company itself brings it's contents to your computer.

Push technology refers to a program, running on your desktop and requests or receives information from the web sites automatically at predetermined times and displays that information on your screen. There are many available services to broadcast or push selected information to a person's computer. Thus, Push Technology is a new type of software application that allows various providers of information to PUSH their content to the web user. Push Technology allows the user to pick the type of information and delivers it to their computer.
