Graduate Students Wanted!

I am looking for highly motivated and skilled students for graduate level research in data intensive distributed systems. At this time only Ph.D. students are sought. Students with strong interest in systems and implementation as well as a good understanding of fundamental theory are encouraged to apply. The topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Distributed data stream processing systems, including issues such as parallelization, load balancing, load shedding, placement optimization, fault-tolerance, etc.
  • Big Data technologies, such as distributed key-value stores, map/reduce systems, bulk-synchronous parallel processing frameworks, etc.
  • Large-scale distributed graph management and mining
  • Peer-to-peer, mobile, and sensor data management

Under my guidance and advice, graduate students are expected to conduct cutting edge research in the areas of distributed systems and data management and publish their results in academic venues such as conferences and journals; and of course have fun while doing it. The kind of research conferences I often follow include the following, which may give you an idea of the research venues of interest:

  • Systems: ICDCS, IPDPS, Middleware, EuroSys, DEBS
  • Data management: SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, EDBT

Requirements:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Computer Science or related disciplines.
  • Strong implementation skills. Knowledge of either C++ or Java is a must. Scripting languages are a plus.
  • Working knowledge of and coursework on data structures and algorithms, operating systems, and database systems is a must. Coursework on optimization theory and probability is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the Unix environment and tools is a plus. I do not like using or relying on MS technologies in my research work.
  • Minimum requirements for application to graduate level study at the Bilkent University must be fulfilled.

Please send me an email or drop by if you are interested.
