Short Biography Here is my life in a nutshell:

  • Born in August 28, 1968 in Corum, and lived there until completion of high school.
  • Graduated from Corum Ataturk Lisesi in 1984.
  • Entered Computer Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University in 1984 and moved to Ankara.
  • Finished undergraduate studies in 1989 and decided to pursue a graduate degree in the States.
  • Moved to Troy, New York for a Masters in Computer Science Department of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in August 1989.
  • Received M.S. in Computer Science in 1991 and made a slight change in the plans and decided to go for a Ph.D.
  • Defended dissertation in 1995 to receive a Ph.D. in Computer Science.
  • Decided to get some industry experience and joined Tom Sawyer Software and moved to half-year-sunny part of California (Berkeley - San Francisco bay area) in 1995.
  • Served the Turkish Armed Forces during the summer of 1996.
  • Got a faculty position in Computer Engineering Department of Bilkent University and moved to Ankara in July 1998.
  • Received the rank of Associate Professor from the Inter-University Council (UAK) in March 2003.
  • Married Emel in September 2005.
  • Became an Associate Professor in Computer Engineering Department of Bilkent University in June 2007.
  • Spent the academic year 2007/8 in Northern California on sabbatical leave.
  • Our son Yalin was born in December 2008.
  • Became a Full Professor in Computer Engineering Department of Bilkent University in 2015.
  • Spent 2015 in the city that never sleeps with MSKCC on sabbatical leave.
