Kufic is one of the oldest Arabic calligraphy types, which was used as a decorative element on tombstones, coins and rugs, as well as for architectural monuments and it consists of holy words from the Quran such as Allah or Mohammed. While methods for the generation and classification of some Islamic patterns in other calligraphy types are proposed, based on our knowledge, the automatic analysis of square Kufic patterns have not been studied previously. In this study, a new line representation for matching Islamic patterns in Square Kufic images is proposed. After the lines in the images are found, sub-patterns in the images are automatically detected. Then, chain code representation for all sub-patterns are extracted and matched by a string matching algorithm. On a collection of 57 Square Kufic images, we obtained promising results for finding the instances of a query pattern and for fully automatic detection of repeating patterns.
