Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), the wireless communication standard popularized by Qualcomm Inc., forms the basis of the 3G wireless communication standards and is the fastest growing wireless technology in the world. In this talk, I will describe the basics of CDMA, as implemented by IS95, and discuss how CDMA mitigates the common problems faced by competing technologies, FDMA and TDMA. In the second part, potential capacity increases achievable by receiver diversity will be presented. A form-factor-accurate PCS-band dual-antenna, dual-receive chain CDMA handset was constructed to assess receive diversity gains achievable with a device of this size. The handset was drive tested on a commercial CDMA2000 1X RC4 system and on a trial TIA-856 (1xEV-DO) system in multiple RF environments. Across the environments tested, diversity gain was up to %89 suggesting a similar increase in system capacity if all subscribers on the network used our prototype phone.
