Project Overview
This project is concerned with organization of repositories on the Net.
In the original project proposal, I
had stated that
- There are Internet sites with many text resources
- Often hand made indices or search engines are used to access data
- Ontologies and automatic categorization provide alternative means to
traditional navigation/search paradigm
and I had aimed to
- Survey both ontology and automatic categorization methods
- Develop a repository categorization tool using either of the approaches
- Categorize a sample text repository with the tool
Naturally, the original aims were too broad. Hence, I've restricted
the project goals to
- Surveying ontology methods for categorization of repositories
- Designing and perhaps implementing categorization software
for repositories on the Net.
In the subsequent sections, I present the problem about large
repositories, afterwards I give background information and references
about Ontology methods. Then, I design a software for applying
ontology methods to repositories. In the discussions, it is assumed
without loss of generality that the repository contains items in
a particular domain such as painting.
