Marvin Minsky cofounded the field of Artificial Intelligence in 1956. Forty years on, still an active research professor at MIT, he is regarded as one of the great thinkers of our age. In a video interview to be shown this week, Minsky looks back the early days of A.I. and at what he sees as the rather disappointing progress that has been made since. Minsky claims that no artifact with the intelligence of a 5 year old child yet exists. The overriding problem is representing common-sense knowledge, solve that and the rest may fall into place, he says. He also muses on machine creativity, whether machines will have feelings and whether they may one day become more intelligent than us!
