Open meeting...
Date: Wed. 25th, 1995 Time: 17:40 Room: A502 (eng. Building)
Abstract:Research in Artificial Intelligence (AI), viewed from a purely engineering perspective, simply attempts to produce better and better machines. The field boasts a number of very powerful techniques which are being used to solve difficult real world problems. At the same time, however, the question arises as to just how far these developments can go. Could we construct machines which rival human beings in terms of intelligence? Although it may not be possible today, is it at least a theoretical possibility or is it, as many claim, an impossibility? If it is possible, would such machines have feelings, emotions, minds?
The Bilkent ACM Special Interet Group on Artificial Intelligence is a loose-knit group of faculty, graduate and undergraduate students interested in both the engineering and philosophical aspects of AI. Our weekly meetings, which are open to everyone, have now been going on for more than two years. They provide a very informal meeting place for discussion of AI related topics. But you don't need to be an expert to join in. Just come along.
In this first meeting of the 1995/1996 academic year, we simply want to get to know what people are interested in finding out about, and discuss possible activities for the coming year (in technical jargon, it's a meta-meeting!)
