There is an increasing variety and amount of online information resources. This makes it necessary to have effective and efficient information retrieval techniques to ensure relevant information is acquired within a 'reasonable' amount of time. Information retrieval systems (IRSs) should be able to adapt to users' particular needs. The aim has been for frequent users of a particular system to benefit from their high usage. The application of machine learning techniques for information retrieval has been investigated and a Context Learner developed for retrieving information from a document-retrieval system.
